Herising Inc. was started in 2005 to challenge prevalent ideas about lesbian women of color. Fed up with the lack of positive representation in the media, partners Maxanne Cheatham, 28, and Turquoise Toppin, 26, aimed to demonstrate the strong voice and buying power of the urban gay population, and in turn, solidify the well-deserved right to be appreciated by mainstream America. The first venture of Herising Inc. is Tomboyz Quarterly Magazine.

Tomboyz Quarterly, which launched in June 2006, is a publication committed to being a vehicle for readers to find compelling and informative themes focusing on the lifestyle and community of urban gay women. With nearly 5,000 premiere issues distributed between five U.S. retail locations and four websites thus far, it is clear a solid interest in the magazine has already been established. TQ relates to the specific needs of a niche market, and is a fresh take on entertainment, fashion, health, civil rights, and news.
